A Systematic Review Comparing Furlow Double - Opposing Z - Plasty and Straight - Line Intravelar

چکیده
1014 The primary goal of palatoplasty is anatomical reconstruction of an intact palate to allow for development of normal speech while minimizing the incidence of oronasal fistula and ensuring long-term harmonious facial growth. Kriens1 first drew attention to the muscular anatomy of the soft palate, describing the abnormal positioning of the levator veli palatini muscle and loss of integrity of the supporting structures as the primary causes for impairment of speech production following palate repair. Therefore, he advocated for release and reorientation of the levator muscles.1 This method, termed intravelar veloplasty, became an inherent component of the most commonly used cleft palate repair techniques, including von Langenbeck palatoplasty, Veau-Wardill-Kilner pushback palatoplasty, and the Bardach two-flap palatoplasty.2 All of these techniques produce a straight-line closure of the soft palate and are often grouped under the single designation of “straight-line” repairs. In 1976, in an attempt to improve the speech results following palate repair while allowing adequate maxillary growth, Furlow3 devised the double-opposing Z-plasty method for the repair of clefts involving the soft palate. This technique has the advantages of lengthening the velum, avoiding overlap between the oral and nasal mucosal

Timing of Tympanostomy Tube Placement and Efficacy of Palatoplasty Technique on the Resolution of Chronic Otitis Media: A Cross-sectional Analysis
BACKGROUND Chronic otitis media with effusion is a persistent complication essentially universal in children with cleft palate. The prevalence of chronic otitis media with effusion is hypothesized to be a result of Eustachian tube dysfunction secondary to the anomalous insertion of the palatal musculature. This study was designed to evaluate the timing of tympanostomy tube placement and the eff...
متن کاملFurlow's double opposing Z-plasty: A case report
Cleft lip and cleft palate has got a high incidence in Asian births. There are different techniques for closure of the cleft. The furlows double opposing Z-plasty repair of cleft palate was first described by Leonard Furlow in 1978. Here we present 2 case of cleft palate treated with Furlows double opposing Zplasty.
متن کاملAn anatomic evaluation of the furlow double opposing Z-plasty technique of cleft palate repair.
The aim of this investigation was to examine velar anatomy following the Furlow double opposing Z-plasty in order to analyse the theoretical effects of this technique. Thirty patients with cleft lip and/or cleft palate who underwent primary Furlow palatoplasties between 1989 and 1994 were reviewed. The mean age at the time of surgery was 6.4 months. Evaluation was performed at a mean time of 2....

BACKGROUND The Furlow palatoplasty is commonly used for the correction of velopharyngeal insufficiency in cleft patients. An alternative procedure is introduced involving a single Z-plasty with overlapping intravelar veloplasty (Woo palatoplasty). This study compared the results of both techniques in the correction of velopharyngeal insufficiency. METHODS After institutional review board appr...
